Behind-the-Scenes with TNG Visual Effects

Take a look at some shots from behind-the-scenes with TNG.

Our founder, Nick Tesi is giving the model some direction on stance and poise. It’s important that she stays in the same position throughout the shoot.

In this session, we also shot for facial motion capture. To help the model out, Nick shows her some examples of facial expressions she can use.

Nothing but fun times at TNG!

Is Mobile 3D Scanning Important?

How mobile is mobile? Some believe being a mobile service means to drive a large truck filled with a lot of equipment. Driving from place to place and taking one or two days to set-up is not our definition of being mobile. It’s more simplistic than that.

Our definition: grab the equipment and head for the door. These days it seems there are a lot of decisions to be made at the last minute. We know it is more about acting instantly to a project than being mobile. If a project is in Maryland, Florida, Texas or Toronto, speed and mobility is of the essence.

Mobile 3D Scanning Services

Here are some things to think about when choosing a mobile service provider.

  1. Are they available to come to your set?
  2. If they need to travel by plane, is their equipment travel size or does the equipment need to be shipped prior to the scanning day? This may require additional charges to the customer.
  3. If the equipment is travel size, will they need to check their bags or can they bring them on the plane? In our experience, if a bag needs to be checked there is the risk of the bag(s) being delayed depending on the size. This may also be an additional charge to the customer.
  4. Have they communicated the amount of space they will need to get the job done?
  5. Are there any special requirements? i.e. does the room/space need to be dark or fully lit?

Mobile 3D Scanning

The best way around all of this is great planning and on-going communication. When the plans change but the time constraints don’t, look for the company that will guarantee their service no matter what comes up.

Pilot Season 2015 is Upon Us

Pilot season is here again, and with as many good shows on network television as we’re used to seeing on cable. It makes us think the revival of TV is here.

Pilot Season

After a long period of reality shows and “Who’s Got Talent” (although we really love those shows), we think the quality of episodics on television that include visual effects is at an all time high – i.e. Marvel’s Avenger offshoots, the History Channel’s Vikings, and HBO bringing it home with Game of Thrones.

This is a rich market of companies who are pushing the limits on what they can do on a weekly series. At times the entire cast and crew only have one week to learn lines, create the effects and shoot. They are competing with effects in films costing 10’s of millions of dollars and taking a year or more to shoot. Never-the-less, these wizards pull off amazing visual effects for each episode.

Many of the series appeal to thrill-seeking consumers. With an appetite for horror, adventure and drama, loyal fans will sit through marathons on Netflix to catch up on past seasons. It is hour after hour of commercial free programs that overwhelm the senses. You know you’ve been there.

There are hundreds of Pilots on the list this Season hoping to make it to air. For all those waiting for the new season of their favorite show, get your La-Z-Boy centered. Don’t forget to break out the popcorn and grab your favorite drink. Get ready to consume more great effects and real entertainment without leaving your home. Of course if you’re watching shows like American Horror Story, you may not be doing a lot of sleeping.

Painting a 3D Model

We’ve worked with a lot of different 3D paint packages over the years and wanted to give our fellow artists some tips on what we see as the top product in the business. One that has really stood out for us and that we feel offers the best result is  The Foundry’s MARI. We use this 3D paint software for the majority of our projects and highly recommend it. The Foundry offers a 15 day trial to test it out, or you can even rent MARI if you don’t want to purchase the software.

Let the Inertia System Move You

We’ve been working with an inertia based motion capture (Mocap) system called Perception. It is capable of providing accurate motion capture data of single or multiple characters. Perception is compact and wireless and brings a freedom from needing to be in a building or large space with hundreds of lights and a team of people directing a performance. An Optical system is an alternative Mocap system available, but there may not always be a need for that level of attention, stage size, expense, and all that goes with it.

Perception doesn’t have a long calibration or setup time and you don’t have to worry about occlusions. You can also use it outside, which allows an even greater freedom for movement and capture.

One of the most important things for us is the ability to bring our 3D models to life after we 3D scan them. There are a number of ways to make your character move from hand-keying animation to using several different types of Mocap.

When choosing a Mocap system, you need to look at what is available. The systems are now very specialized, so find out both what you need and the budget you have available for your project. Also incorporate how long you have to complete the work to meet the deadlines for the project.

Good luck with you productions and as the saying goes “The mind is like a parachute, it works best when open.”
