When Is Our 3D Scanning Job Complete?

We just finished a complex scanning job that involved several large elements – all to be 3D scanned on stage using Lidar Scanners – within one day.

We were asked to scan all of the elements immediately because one of the sets was scheduled to be immersed in a water tank, which would make it difficult and possibly more time consuming to scan later.

To complete this job, we needed to coordinate not just our scanning schedule and professional photo session, but also plan around the various painters, the special effects crew, the riggers, the grip and electric crews, and the production department – all of whom also needed access to the same elements in order to meet their own deadlines.

Naturally, the crew’s workflow constantly changed, so we had to work around these shifting schedules; however, because we were well prepared, and had carefully coordinated with each of the various department heads, we were able to successfully scan all of the required objects within a normal day’s schedule.

For TNG, it’s not just about creating an exceptional 3D scan, but it’s also about accommodating our client and their own schedules throughout the entire process. We keep our clients continuously updated on the progress of each stage of cleanup and texturing. Our job is complete when our customers walk away with a smile and the satisfaction that the project was accomplished not just professionally, but also as smoothly as possible.

Mobile Services: Tips For 3D Scanning On Site

Creating digital doubles of talent, props, vehicles, and buildings is becoming more prominent in film and television along with video game trailers and cinematics. It is vital for a company to provide a mobile service that is flexible to those involved in projects in the entertainment business. Due to their schedules being moving targets, they have come to rely on such benefits.

Mobile 3D Scanning Services

As a mobile company ourselves, here are some tips on how to provide this service, and how to best travel with your equipment.
  1. Only stay on the set as long as you’re needed. If possible, arrive and depart on the same day, or within one or two days, to save on cost. Try to travel with your equipment in the cabin so that it does not get lost in transit or in the airport.
  2. Make sure to have back-up equipment. You never know what could go wrong while you are on site, so if it is possible, carry along back-ups for each piece of equipment. Overnight shipping might work, but if you have the talent right in front of you and they are leaving that evening, it may not be an option.
  3. A mobile service needs to be reliable and produce a quality product. A decent delivery schedule is also a must. Get references if you are using someone or a company for the first time. Saving money is important, but not at the expense of losing a great shot or model.

The Evolution of Character

Characters in media (movies, commercials, TV and games) that require digital doubles via 3D scanning, need to be captured accurately to retain all of the unique qualities of the talent. For example, the actor/actress may have distinct facial characteristics such as scars, eye color, nose shape, and eyebrows. The level of detail you will need is determined by the proximity of the camera to the digital double.

3D scanning technology allows us to provide your production with realistic replication. This applies to heads, bodies, wardrobes, environments, props, and whatever else you may need to replicate. A full body and head scan along with blend shapes, facial performance, and Mocap is a grand way to bring your digital doubles to life. Throw in some cloth simulation software, dynamic hair, and voice-over to increase the amount of realism your digital doubles can bring to the screen.

Films like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Avatar have shown us that innovation is not dead. As your 3D scanning service provider, we seek opportunities that will improve your production through our valuable service. Allow us to help you grow your toolbox by offering our services. We thank you for sharing this exciting time with us in VFX. Let’s continue the adventure.

Get What You Need! Raw Scan to Ready-to-Rig Model

Let us paint a picture. The decision to have 3D scanning done for your project has been made, and thanks to your impeccable planning and choosing of a vendor who was easy to work with, you’ve had all your characters scanned without incident. Now what?

Let’s evaluate your resources. Do you have the time to work on these models in-house? If so, can your team take the scans from ‘raw data’ to ‘fully textured’ models on schedule? If you have a staff of modelers, you can put them to work immediately and get ahead on your model development.

On the other hand, if you are doing multiple projects and your resources are being used elsewhere, or you just don’t want to hassle with any part of the 3D model production process, your 3D scanning service company should be able to help you out.

Some 3D scanning service companies will take your models from creation in the scanning session, all the way to preparing them for rigging. In fact, some may even be able to rig the model. This service will enable you to get through projects faster. With your 3D scanning service company providing ready-to-rig models, your team can focus on other parts of your project. Just make sure your 3D scanning service company has a copy of your preferred wire-frame set-up to avoid any unnecessary back-end edits.

Your CFO may want to run an analysis to compare the costs and determine if there are savings available. Remember, time is money. When your 3D scanning service company provides a full range of services for you, you’ve automatically increased the size of your team. As your team stays focused on other aspects of the project, the time you’ll save will be beneficial. While a cost/time analysis may seem like a chore, we believe in the end you’ll be satisfied when you see the potential savings.

The bottom line is: Get what you need! Go raw, or rig the project in your favor.
