3D Scanning: Luxury or Necessity?

We have been in the 3D scanning business for many years and have spoken with a lot of people who are both for and against it. Some believe 3D scanning is a luxury, but in reality when you think about the amount of time and money it can save, it is a viable solution.

3D Scanning makes sense when you have a number of characters that need digital doubles in a short period of time, and especially if you need to match them to real actors. However, if the cost of this endeavor does not justify doing the job, then another avenue may be pursued.

In the early days of 3d scanning, there needed to be a dark environment to scan a model, but now the scanning can be done just about anywhere. When scanning heads, you can also scan a number of expressions that will give you blend shapes or just references for your artists to use if facial performance will be needed. Texture maps, displacement maps, and normal maps are all available as well.

You also have the option of taking the scan model as a raw mesh and have your own crew finish it. This will save you from having to buy your own system and maintaining an operator. But if your crew is busy, the scanning team should be able to accommodate your needs fast and efficiently at a cost similar to what you would have paid your own staff.

In the end, it’s your project and you dictate the finished look needed and the number of polygons. This is a service that puts you in control as to how you would like the modeled delivered. As you can see, 3D scanning is not a luxury when you consider the demanding schedules of our clients. It is an absolute necessity to have this service available.

Is 3D Scanning Hair Impossible?

At TNG Visual Effects, we’ve developed a new method of 3d scanning for hair. This is quite monumental because it is widely known that scanners have difficulty with hair due to it not being a solid object, among other problems.

The type of hair we can scan will be static, and cannot be animated, but would serve as good reference, or in cases where the hair will not move in a scene. Granted, for humans, it is necessary to manage the hair with a cap or such in order to fully capture the ears. Hair may also be found on props such as rope or a mask. Animals are mostly covered in hair, and should thus capture more easily. We’ve also come across many outfits for production that have hair. As we step into the future, we’ll be debuting new technology and techniques with the intent of nothing but stellar results.

Build It and We Will Come

Your Set, interiors and exteriors, 3d scan building, lidar scan

Movies, episodics, commercials and music videos are using more and more digital assets. Whether they are modeled, sculpted, or 3D scanned, we are seeing an increase in the need for more digital buildings, building extensions, rooms, caves and larger vehicles for a scene or action.

At TNG Visual Effects we bring our experience and ability to come in and get the job done as quickly as possible while still maintaining the quality our customers need. Our 3D scanning equipment is small and travels with us by ground or air as needed. Once we arrive on location we quickly survey the area, set up markers for reference and get to work.

In some cases if a set is torn down and you opt not to have a digital backup, you might be stuck recreating a digital version from photos which may not work. When 3D scanning for insurance purposes we do not process anything until you need it. This will save you both money and sleep. Let us know how we can help you with you next project.
