Building A Valuable Library Of Digital Assets

As Visual Effects Supervisors and Producers, it’s easy to concentrate on the immediate task at hand, such as scanning a specific body or face for the newest game, or scanning a special prop for that feature or episodic project, or even scanning a customized product for use in a commercial or music video.

Scanned digital assets can also be used for advertising, promotion, marketing, and public relations as well as supplemental content for websites, blogs, or trailers. Other members of the project’s team such as the Client, Executive Producer, or Head of Production may want to use the digital assets for purposes other than what is being worked on such as for the presentation or promotion of a new product design, showing a wider variety of colors, fabrics, or textures. In a pre-vis presentation or project pitch, VFX Producers could use those assets to add additional props or characters to the story, so their clients or investors could more easily visualize their appearance in the developing story.

You could save significant money down the line having those assets readily available, or they could even generate additional revenue. This is certainly something to think about in an age where digital assets are being used for a wider range of purposes. When the next project comes in, consider other ways the images might be used for.

Transition from Creative Thought to Reality with Digital Assets

You might already know that the digital age is here and as we move into the future, more digital content will be needed to support television, movies headed to the big screen, commercials, and print ads on magazines and billboards. We haven’t even mentioned video games. If you’re in production, how long will you wait before including the necessary digital assets needed to cut time and cost?

More producers and directors have increased their usage of digital assets. This includes their set environments, foregrounds, elements or props, characters, and at times even the action taking place on the stage. We have scanned several large vehicles and areas for production, including an entire two block area of buildings on both sides of a street. By building in the present, we can use our knowledge from the past to help us turn our creative thought into reality, paying attention to current trends that aid us in this endeavor.

No, the time for 100% digital is not today or tomorrow, but it is coming.  We are ready, and will be here to help you get the data you need to include more digital assets in your production.

How Would You Like Your Assets Delivered?

Digital assets are created by many different means. Our unique ability to provide last minute 3D scans for a wide range of objects, coupled with various delivery options, is no secret. As a way to fully meet your production needs, TNG Visual Effects remains the most flexible option for 3D scanning services in the entertainment industry as we’re able to be anywhere you need us. So what exactly can we deliver?

Scalable Base Mesh

We can customize a mesh flow to match any poly count which saves on the cost and time associated with processing models at multiple resolutions eliminating the need for a team of modelers to create a character or asset from scratch. The texture map may also be requested at varying resolutions.

Bits and Subsamples for Texture Maps

Ordering high resolution models will allow you the ability to subsample as needed (for example, foreground and background characters or objects for film and media). Another area of flexibility lies in the ability to choose whether the texture will be 8-bits or 16-bits. 16-bit texture maps have more color information, allowing us to supply you with a well-defined, striking texture to go with your 3D model. For contrast, an 8-bit image has 16.8 million color possibilities, however a 16-bit image has 281 trillion color possibilities! The higher level of color information allows for more photo manipulation and control without degradation.

Range of Specs

If you have a number of modelers at your command to develop your character(s), we can give you clean, raw meshes, and they can extrapolate upon them. You will also get buildings, vehicles, props, and anything else you need scanned delivered to your specifications.

Beyond Raw Mesh

Our team is staffed by talented artists who are sculptors, modelers, and texture specialists. They will get you started with 3D scans and see your models through to the level of detail you’ve requested. Your call, raw to ready-to-rig.

The future begins today. Let us give you the best digital assets available for your time, money, location, and exact specifications. There are many solutions, but few will meet all the parameters that define your needs. Our team of scan technicians and artists are here to ensure you get what you need. Let us be your catalyst from concept to reality.

Digital Assets: 3D Scanning Props

Props come in all shapes and sizes and are necessary elements for movies and other forms of entertainment. They are an integral part of the storytelling process. Last year we participated in a demo that presented a real bow propelling a virtual arrow. It’s definitely better to be on the receiving end of a virtual arrow than a real one!

Along with scanning a prop, there are other things to consider like the availability of the prop, the safety of the prop, the purpose of the prop, etc. It’s also important to balance the needs of production along with the artists’ abilities. For some projects (although an artist is skilled enough), it is not necessary to model every detail of a prop. For example, it can take up to a week to complete a 3D scanned gun with only a single modeler working on it. We carefully communicate the needs of our clients to keep projects on target.

3D scanning helps propel the speed of 3D model creation, especially when the resources to model are in short supply. But it also brings with it the same list of challenges affecting other scans. Consider the spokes on a bicycle wheel, are they shiny or transparent? To cover any data not picked up by the scanner due to reflection and material width, some modeling will be done to complete the project. All of these obstacles are overcome in order to keep the project moving forward.

We have created virtual props for commercials such as food products that were packaged and without packaging. Whatever objects you need, we’re here to build your virtual world, one 3D scan at a time.

3D Scanning: Replicate Your World

3D scanning is the science of using various types of scanning technology to scan objects and turn them into “digital assets.” Whether your digital assets are created via a small handheld scanner, or a machine that has to be transported, the amount and types of digital assets you can create are limitless. Here are a few examples of objects your 3D scanning company should have experience creating:

  • Dynamic Objects: People, Animals, Zombies
  • Large Static Objects: Buildings, Sets, Environments
  • Transport Objects: Automobiles, Ships, Trains, Planes
  • Props or Miscellaneous Objects: Guns, Weapons, Jewelry

No job too big, too small, or too awesome.

It is recommended you use your 3D scanning company as a single source vendor to meet your needs. Keep it simple. Having one direct contact (who can provide high level customer support) for all your 3D scanning needs will simplify the process. You should also feel confident knowing your scan team has experience troubleshooting in the field.  You shouldn’t even have to ask whether or not your scan team will have back-up equipment on site. A good 3D scanning company won’t leave home without it!

The many facets of the entertainment industry are not lost on 3D scanning. Scans are useful in TV episodics, mini-series, commercials, game cinematics, trailers, and previs. Or, let your game developer begin working on your video game while you’re still shooting scenes for the main title. Asset reuse across various markets is also an attractive factor as to why your production needs cost effective 3D scans.

3D scanning is now more important than ever for creating varying degrees of visual effects shots. This technique gives the director and writer the ability to translate their story more precise to their vision. No more crashing expensive cars or wasting money on props that can’t be reused. The possibilities are greater than ever.

Go ahead, 3D scan your world. What will you replicate next?

The applications for your 3D scans are endless.
