How Would You Like Your Assets Delivered?

Digital assets are created by many different means. Our unique ability to provide last minute 3D scans for a wide range of objects, coupled with various delivery options, is no secret. As a way to fully meet your production needs, TNG Visual Effects remains the most flexible option for 3D scanning services in the entertainment industry as we’re able to be anywhere you need us. So what exactly can we deliver?

Scalable Base Mesh

We can customize a mesh flow to match any poly count which saves on the cost and time associated with processing models at multiple resolutions eliminating the need for a team of modelers to create a character or asset from scratch. The texture map may also be requested at varying resolutions.

Bits and Subsamples for Texture Maps

Ordering high resolution models will allow you the ability to subsample as needed (for example, foreground and background characters or objects for film and media). Another area of flexibility lies in the ability to choose whether the texture will be 8-bits or 16-bits. 16-bit texture maps have more color information, allowing us to supply you with a well-defined, striking texture to go with your 3D model. For contrast, an 8-bit image has 16.8 million color possibilities, however a 16-bit image has 281 trillion color possibilities! The higher level of color information allows for more photo manipulation and control without degradation.

Range of Specs

If you have a number of modelers at your command to develop your character(s), we can give you clean, raw meshes, and they can extrapolate upon them. You will also get buildings, vehicles, props, and anything else you need scanned delivered to your specifications.

Beyond Raw Mesh

Our team is staffed by talented artists who are sculptors, modelers, and texture specialists. They will get you started with 3D scans and see your models through to the level of detail you’ve requested. Your call, raw to ready-to-rig.

The future begins today. Let us give you the best digital assets available for your time, money, location, and exact specifications. There are many solutions, but few will meet all the parameters that define your needs. Our team of scan technicians and artists are here to ensure you get what you need. Let us be your catalyst from concept to reality.

From Statue to Real Life – Texturing for 3D Models

Do your artists possess the talent required to get the most out of reference photos and software like Mari and Photoshop?

To begin building your textures, it’s best to start with the highest resolution photos. We capture raw images in our photography and process them to ensure that the white balance, exposure, and any other needed adjustments are made prior to texturing. We output the images as non-compressed tiffs so that the final delivered texture has no unnecessary compression which degrades the colors and details. When shooting photography, we opt for cross polarization filters to eliminate highlights if necessary, or use a macro lens if we’re dealing with small objects. The reason to use cross polarization is to end up with a flat texture that can be lit later to match the lighting conditions of the film, television or game project.

To apply the texture on the 3D model, UV’s must be set down. Based on your project, you may want to use a variety of maps to get the effect you desire. Our most commonly asked for texture maps are diffuse (color), normal maps, and displacement maps. Ambient occlusion maps, specular maps, and cavity maps are available upon request.

Likewise, the size of the texture can be suited to your needs. Regardless of your desired output, we’ll texture at a high resolution and downsize it to your needs or keep it as high as necessary. The most asked for resolution on texture maps is 4k (4096×4096).

Textures give your model life. Whether your artists drink Xango juice or not, your 3D scanning company should offer customization and specifications to meet your needs. Top notch texture maps will make you think, “Yea, that’s my model!” Go ahead, you can say it…Winning!

The VFX Shoot for Texture Maps

Reference pictures are taken in Visual Effects to create texture maps. There are a number of outcomes to keep in mind. It has become a craft in its own right. It is more than getting your point-and-shoot out of your pocket – no matter how many megapixels it can shoot.

Great texture maps come from using the proper f-stops, apertures, camera lenses, lighting, etc. What is the effect you need? What is the outcome you’re looking for? Will you be requiring specular maps, displacement maps, normal maps, cavity maps, ambient occlusion maps, or some other type of map for your object or model?

The one we are constantly hearing about is for Cross-Polarization photography and specular maps.  This calls for a cross-polarizing lens and cross-polarizing Mylar to be used on your lights. By adjusting your lens on the camera back-and-forth, you can get the polarized look of no highlights on the talent and readjust the lens by 90 degrees to get the specular look.

It is also very important to keep an even lighting on the subject as to prepare a flat lit model in production so that they can light the item or talent in their system with the proper conditions of the created environment.

This process gives our customers what they need.  We also shoot in raw as well as jpeg, to give us the ability to adjust the image if needed via white balance and other photographic manipulation.

As the saying goes, “The devil is in the details,”  however, the details are not always accessible. A professional photo shoot must be done with the 3D pipeline in regard, therefore you need to plan your shoot, and shoot your plan.
